Singin’ in the Rain is a really great film. At first glance it seems to just be another one of those boring musicals that were so popular in the 1940’s and well into the 1960’s (Meet me in St. Louis, An American in Paris, Oklahoma, King and I, White Christmas, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, etc), where the subject matter was more important than the music and writing. The biggest difference between those musicals and Singin’ in the Rain is the writing. Rain is clever and witty consistently throughout and is one of the sharpest pieces of writing that came out of the Arthur Freed machine.
I believe that even if you can’t appreciate a musical, you’d appreciate this film. If nothing else, it contains some of the best choreographed dance numbers that I’ve seen.
