I remember being ten or eleven and not having access to new episodes of Dragon Ball Z - I relied heavily on Japanese (or Cantonese episodes in some cases) to learn more about the story. Watching a lot of fan-made music videos helped too - lots of clips were set to music so the language didn’t matter.

I was flipping through the radio today and caught the tail-end of “The Kids Aren’t Alright” by Offspring and immediately thought back to this music video that I hadn’t seen in over a decade. There were a couple other AMVs that I also remember, can’t seem to find Right Said Fred’s “I’m too Sexy”, or “Music of My Heart” by N*SYNC and Gloria Estefan though - looks like the Tripod and Angelfire sites from ten years ago really don’t work!

FUNimation have set a date for Dragon Ball Z Level 1.1 and released details of the forthcoming boxset. The new double disc set includes all new 1080p video, painstakingly digitally transferred from the original 16mm film and digitally remastered Dolby® TrueHD audio.

“Working with a very old and fragile source film presented a number of challenges for the restoration process,” said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and president at FUNimation Entertainment. “Our purpose was to restore the series as accurately as possible, to what it must have been like to see it when it was originally mastered, and preserve the charm of the animation. After all, it is of a particular time and place.”

Dragon Ball Z Level 1.1 includes the first 17 episodes on two discs with over 400 minutes of action and among the extras included on this release is a feature that looks at the restoration and remastering processes. Dragon Ball Z Level 1.1 will be available at major retailers nationwide on November 8, 2011.

Why does this keep happening to me. I bought the Dragon Ball Kai Blu-rays because I thought Dragon Ball Z would never come to Blu-ray. There’s no way I’m going to pick these new ones up unless they’re done properly and they’re dirt cheap. I’m such a sucker for DBZ that I’ll end up wanting them eventually, but I’m not willing to bend over backwards for them.

Went through all of Season 8 of Dragon Ball Z in three days and picked up season 9 to finish off the series. When I’m done I want to do some sort of review of my thoughts and experiences re-watching one of the most influential television shows of my childhood.
