I hope Eight Legged Freaks realizes it’s not a very good film. It must, right? It’s not that it’s unbearable in any way, it’s a fairly clever homage to the sci-fi/horror genre of the 1950’s. There’s just something really “off” about the way it exists. It doesn’t acknowledge its own silliness in the film. There’s bad cinematography, a terrible storyline and absolutely bizarre acting choices - but I want to believe that this is intentional. After all, when you make a film called “Eight Legged Freaks” you have to be self aware of yourself.
Honestly, I had never seen Eight Legged Freaks until this past week and I can’t say I was “missing out” on anything in particular. It’s part of that group of weird films from the late 90’s early 2000’s that focused heavily on being quirky (like Evolution, EuroTrip/Road Trip, Mars Attacks!). It was an okay film, but there were times where it felt like everything was going perfectly wrong. If you haven’t seen it, you’re not missing out on anything extraordinary - but it’s a quick silly film.
