Everything about the trailer for Beauty Day had me hooked. It was a documentary that was part Canadian, part Jackass, and there was an awesome Dan Deacon song over the climax. I was really excited to get into the film, and turned out that it was absolutely worth my time.
The documentary features the story of the rise and “fall” of Ralph Zavadil, also known as Cap’n Video. Ralph recorded hours of jackass-like stunts that aired on television and he became something of a local superstar. It’s been twenty years since Cap’n Video, and Ralph’s decided to put on one last show for his fans.
The film goes through Ralph’s “career” and love life and all the things that have come with it: fame and loss included. You definitely feel for Ralph, he’s an honest, kind man with a heart of gold, but he also tends to get caught up in impressing his audience which has bit him back in the past.
It turned out to be a very heartwarming documentary that I highly recommend watching. There’s also a closeness to home that I feel also being from Southern Ontario that I thought was really kind of fascinating in watching this documentary.
Check it out, you won’t regret it - this guy has passion.
