Oh man I didn’t enjoy Splice.
I don’t think it was due to my distaste for horror films either. It’s October and I’ve been trying to watch as many horror films as I can with Meg so we can make the most out of what is usually considered the ‘scariest’ month of the year. So we had to watch the…I guess it’s a sci-fi horror drama - Splice. The quick synopsis is that a group of scientists who had been engineering new animals for a stable food source take it upon themselves to “splice” their DNA with the freaky new-found animal to create a weird hybrid creature that they name Dren and raise her as their daughter.
It stars Oscar award winning actor Adrien Brody and Oscar nominee Sarah Polley as the two lover scientists who have alternate viewpoints on the ethics involved with creating a human hyrbid thing that ends up getting way out of control and a somewhat chaotic ending ensues. I think I sat through the whole thing in hopes that the acting would take hold and they would save the film from being way over it’s head in terms of complication and unnecessary story arcs.
If for nothing else, it’s absolutely worth to see once. Just to say you saw it and that you can move on with your life. It’s almost completely unbelievable and all everything that you expect in a typically horror film kind of spins out of control, you can see it unraveling in front of your eyes…which is such a bizarre experience. I know a lot of people really enjoyed this, and like I said - it could definitely be because of my distaste for a lot of horror films, but I really didn’t like this one.
